Pastor John, or "PJ" as his church family knows him, is "almost" a hometown boy. Raised in west Wichita, he attended Wichita West High School, graduating in 1973. Following high school, PJ attended Friends University, graduating in 1977 with a degree in Religion and Philosophy. In 1978 he and his family moved to Wilmore, Kentucky where John began his ministerial education at Asbury Theological Seminary.
Graduating in 1982 from Asbury with a Masters in Divinity (M.Div.), PJ and family moved to Bogue, KS, where he began work as the associate pastor for the Graham County Parish. In Bogue for nearly four years, PJ was transferred to the Otterbein UMC in Russell, Kansas in 1985. Weathering the oil and farm crises of the late 80's, the church grew and prospered in a time of economic strain. Then, in October 1994, following the death of the Rev. Mark Oplinger, PJ and family moved to the Goddard community.
John is married to the former Melinda Falconbridge (North High, '74). Together they have two sons, David (Goddard High, '95), who is married to the former Tami Meverden (Goddard High, '98), and Phillip Andrew (Goddard High, '99) who is married to the former Lindsay Lee White. Between the two families there are now three Martyn grandchildren: Eric and Isaac, (David's) and Leah (Phillip's). They are precious in Grandma and Grandpa's sight. And, yes, they have pictures. The Martyns love the Lord, at least one of their two cats, and the people and work of the Goddard UMC.
